Equal, percentage or shares: which way of splitting should you use?
Equal split
Everyone pays the same amount. Use it for shared meals, taxis, groceries and anything that benefits everyone equally. A $120 dinner among four people is $30 each.
Exact amounts
Each person enters what they owe. This is ideal when a receipt shows who ordered what, for example when one person had a $45 steak and another a $18 salad.
Percentages
Each person pays a percentage of the total, and the percentages add up to 100. This works well for income-based splits, such as 60% and 40% on a $1,000 utility and internet bill.
Shares
Each person gets a number of shares, and the cost is divided in proportion. A couple and a single friend sharing a cabin might give the couple 2 shares and the friend 1: on $300, that is $200 and $100. Shares are handy for groups that include families or couples.
Which should you pick?
Start with equal for most things. Switch to shares when group sizes differ, percentages for income-based costs, and exact amounts when a receipt decides it. Mixing methods across expenses in the same ledger is completely normal.
